It's been so long since this book has released and there's even an outstanding Netflix show based on this! So I'm not going to pen down a Review like I normally do but rather I'll just talk and rant about what I thought about it!
For those who are not familiar with this book, Six of Crows is first book in Duology which is set two years after the events of Shadow and Bone trilogy. Where Shadow and Bone is all about Grishamagic Royalty, wars... Six of Crows is like opposite of it! It's about underground gangsters, barrel thugs, trades, finances and most importantly... Extremely genius plotted heists planned by none other than Kaz Brekker ; the most ruthless person in whole city of Ketterdam, leader of Dregs (a gang in Barrel)!

There's no job that Kaz can't pull off no matter how risky it is or how much amount of violence is involved. Within few pages I was in love with him. He's smart with numbers and ledgers, he's cold hearted but only to his enemies. He shows he's all tough or he doesn't care about others but reading his POV chapters it's easy to love the way he's considerate for his crew 😭 He always looks out for them even when he gives them death stares 😭 He's only 17, walks with a cane but no one dares to cross him. He's someone who carries burden of a very traumatic past and that past made him the way he is today.
Kaz is offered big money to break into Ice Court which is impenetrable Fjerdan military base & home to Royals of Fjerda (basically like The White House). So he takes up the challenge with his selected crew of Crows (Dregs run a betting house called Crow Club hence they are called Crows).
His crew includes Jesper and Inej who are Kaz's most trusted fellow members of Dregs. Jesper, a Zemeni tall sharpshooter or I should say a very handsome & excellent shooter with an equally amazing sense of humor! It is so easy to fall in love with Jes 😭
Inej, aka Spider aaka Wraith is a Suli girl who collects information for Kaz. There's no wall or roof she can't scale, no one sees her unless she wants to be noticed. She also carries her own past but nevertheless she's doing great at her job with the Dregs. We can see that sometimes her past affects her which is something really difficult to overcome but we can see how she wants to forget it and try to move on.
Wylan is demolitions expert for the Dregs. Even though he's from privileged background, he has his own share of troubles that he'd rather be in an unfamiliar living situation in Barrel than being with his rich father. Wylan is great at science. Six of Crows doesn't give him pov chapters but I saw his character grow as the story went. His confidence grew, he felt home with the crew which is like what I wanted for him 😭
Nina, a Heartrender who was abducted by Fjerdans who consider Grisha as witches & captivates them at Ice Court. Grisha who are caught by Fjerdans are trialed and executed, always. Nina escaped en route and incidentally saved her captor Fjerdan soldier Matthias. They both ended up in Ketterdam. Nina works as Grisha Heartrender and owes a debt to Dregs so that she can get enough money to go back to her homeland Ravka. Kaz relies on Nina for her Corporalki Grisha skills.
Matthias Helvar, who've always hated Grisha people like all the Fjerdans. He hates Grisha for their powers deeming them 'unnatural' humans. There's this big tension and mystery between Nina and Matthias which is difficult to know until the other half of the book. Nina and Matthias had survived the shipwreck en route to Fjerda. They both managed to get till Ketterdam after which Matthias ends up in the baddest prison because of Nina. If I say even a little more than that then I'll end up spoiling the story.
Kaz breaks Matthias out of the prison because he knows there's no one better to give them insides and workings of the impenetrable Ice Court any better than a Fjerdan military personnel.
...
The story is very interesting, it's whizzingly plotted and there's no way to know whole truth till the end. Every time I thought that oh my they are going to die or being caught ; Kaz is ready with a trick up his sleeve. And let me tell you, he never runs out of them!
The character development and how they unravel themselves is epically beautiful. I saw six individuals becoming one team throughout the book. Each one of them had scars but they overcame all their insecurities and fears themselves.
I loved reading it for many reasons. I've read so many mixed reviews but I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and would recommend this Duology to everyone. Brilliantly written story and lyrical characters, these two factors always make me happy.
The dialogues are strong and bold. They leave a mark behind. When I read them, I could feel that these words are coming from a 17/18 year old kids who've gone through a lot, who've matured and learnt the cruel ways of the world through hard ways.
I do hope that you enjoyed reading my discussion and thoughts on Six of Crows 🖤
Until then... No Mourners 🖤
