After reading this book, I am in awe of this world created by Roseanne Brown! The book is thoughtfully knitted into a beautiful story about a dystopian place called Ziran.
I had a hard time accepting the fact that this is a work of fiction. The people, culture, history and magic... All of these lured me into the story and I couldn't get enough. The intricate stories weaved through every page and brought the characters together.
There are two POVs - Malik and Karina. Malik and his two sisters are traveling to the prestigious city of Ziran in hope of finding source of income to support their family.
Karina 'Princess and future Sultana' of Ziran finds her royal life restraining. Series of personal tragedies makes her want to leave her home Ksar Alahari and Ziran forever and wants to live her life on her own terms rather than expectation of the people especially her mother.
Solstasia, the most grand festivals for people of Ziran brings the two protagonists together.
Malik ends up in a blood oath with Idir - The Faceless King banished from Ziran thousands of years ago. The deal is to kill Princess Karina to save his little sister. To get close to the Princess, he participates in the Solstasia Championship. All Champions representing different houses get to live in the royal residence throughout Solstasia, perfect opportunity for Malik to kill the princess.

One of the requirements of this magic involves procuring heart of a king... To get this she announces to marry winner of Solstasia championship as the grand prize.
Malik's quest to win the challenge and Katrina's to kill the champion... Who will succeed?
