Dancing at the Pity Party

About Author :

Tyler Feder is a full-time illustrator based in Chicago(pretty obvious, just look at the book!!!) She graduated from Northwestern University in 2011. In 2012, Tyler began posting her artwork online, and within five years she had grown her illustration company, Roaring Softly, into a recognizable brand with a mix of witty pop culture art and intersectional feminist pieces. (That's so inspiring and just so cool!)

Book Review :

My Ratings : 5/5

I couldn't help myself reading this as quickly as possible because in a long time I was able to not think anything like what's gonna happen next in the story, will there be any villain or any other plot twist. It's in my opinion that even if you like fantasy /fiction books over non fiction books, you should still read this book or similar books like this to just give it a break from all the worrying, book hangover and constant ranting over dead characters (trust me I've been there) You should give this book a try.
Dancing At the Pity Party by Tyler Feder is a kind of a memoir which is illustrated!! And that's kind of a book which everyone loves. Funny book with Pictures, even though at some point sadness maybe overwhelming, but Tyler has still delivered her exceptional humor throughout to keep it light. (Still I cried like thrice while reading)
This book follows such a painful journey of Tyler's mom who was diagnosed with Cancer and didn't make it. And quite frankly I didn't know some things about this disease, treatments and what people actually go through before I read this book. Behind the scenes of what patient and their families go through is difficult and we can simply not able to imagine ourselves in their shoes. And loads of respect and love to those who have been through some tough times.
We are introduced to Tyler's mom in first chapter and we get to know such a lively, fun and cool person. And it's overwhelming to see what a disease does to a person at end.Tyler illustrated a before and after cancer depiction of her mom and it's something not easy to absorb especially for a family member. (I myself got pretty attached to Tyler's mom just like she's a next door neighbor or long lost relative)
The chapter where her mom is towards the end of her life is most painful to go through. We get a little fraction of idea of what the family goes through, because it's obviously very sad to see your most loved person as what they aren't but have become due to this horrible illness. Tyler also gives us glimpses of Jewish funerals and cultural insights.
Grief is not easy, certainly when it's attached with a person you love the most. What I've learnt from reading this is that we fail to understand what someone is going through when they lose a loved one. Sensitiveness, communication and emotional frequency is important to understand.
This book deserves more than 5 stars for the story narration, soothingly beautiful illustrations and ofcourse for the person who's it dedicated to (Tyler's mom).
Read the book to know more about her mom and Tyler's journey through this difficult and unfathomable time. And also because it's a pretty awesome book. It will not leave you sad but rather you'll be smiling because this book also showed Tyler's love for her mom and how she remembers her.
